Good Blog News

October 16, 2006 By Will Richardson

Nice article from a few days ago in The Seattle Times: Living: Teachers are reaching out to students with a new class of blogs

“Never in 25 years of teaching have I seen a more powerful motivator for writing than blogs,” [Mark] Ahlness said. “And that’s because of the audience. Writing is not just taped on the refrigerator and then put in the recycle bin. It’s out there for the world to see. Kids realize other people are reading what they write.”

Nice way to start the week…

I’ll never forget the time that I remarked to a group of students that writing is more powerful than speaking because when you speak only the people in close proximity hear you. When you write everybody can read what you wrote. The students didn’t understand what I meant because in their world only their teacher read what they wrote. Fortunately, blogs have changed this. Blogging is incredibly empowering.

How do teachers normally run student blogging? Do they normally control a central website and link to the students? My Ed Tech prof runs our website and it has bloggin features included. What specific blog providers are best for ed blogs?
