Live Shirky Interview This Thursday 11 am EST

July 7, 2008 By Will Richardson

As I’ve mentioned before, I’ll be doing a live streaming interview with Clay Shirky this Thursday at 11 am at my Ustream Channel. I’ll be picking his brain on how what he sees are the educational implications of the changes and shifts set out in his book “Here Comes Everybody,” and I’m hoping you’ll participate as well. Most UStreamers know that there is a chat window that comes with every show, but I’ll also be opening up the cohost feature for those of you with camera and mic that want to come on and ask a question as well. (I’d appreciate it if you’d let me know ahead of time if you plan to do that, just for organization sake.)

If you’d rather just leave a question in this comment thread, I’d be happy to try to work it in.

Hope to see you on Thursday!

Is the interview on Wednesday or Thursday? I am reading the book now and will be tuning in.

Damn, Will, that’s midnight Thursday my time in Seoul. Couldn’t you be a little considerate of your audience and schedule it for around 11 p.m. EST? (A comfy noon here.)

Just joshing. Midnight’s early for me. I’ll be there, with webcam and mike, if that bit works out. Was just annotating the last two chapters behind the wheel in a traffic jam this afternoon. Timing’s good.

    Will,

I’ll do my best to be live but in case I’m not I’d like him to address my perceptions from the book that suggest, people’s online efforts are largely done with the intent to move to more personal or face to face experiences.
….”Meetup groups for virtual contacts shows that even online communication that emulates face-to-face interaction still leaves people wanting real human contact.” [pp.199]

My argument for schools is that the development of online and virtual communities are for many a gateway to more personal, live interactions.

This video from Colorado would suggest a shift in the way we deliver education. http://snurl.com/2vbso [video_google_com]

I argue that social learning is a key to the sustainability of bricks and mortar education. There is value in meeting together and being together.

So will that verbose preamble, here’s my questions for Mr. Shirky:

“Is my premise about the goal of online communities seeking real life interactions correct? And if so, what might this look like in 5 years? Is there an obvious link to the way we learn?

Will, did the interview happen? I’m not seeing it on your uStream channel.
