Skype Recording

December 13, 2005 By Will Richardson

Could it be? A free add on to Skype that lets you record your conversations? It’s an early Christmas present. Only $19.95 to upgrade to the power version which allows you to record conference calls. Hmmm…

I just tried this with a friend and I am now officially one happy camper. I just haven’t been satisfied with the quality of Gizmo and have already removed it from my already cluttered hard drive. And I’ve been thinking about doing more interview type podcasting a la Tim Wilson.

UPDATE: I upgraded to the pro account and recorded a conference call and it’s AWESOME. It’s another step at making it even easier to use recorded conversations as a part of class curricula or to share with other audiences or to archive in your portfolio or… Very, very cool!

    Hey Will,

With you on the Gizmo thing. I have it connecting now, but half the time it won’t dial a number, and when I do an echo test the quality is nothing like we had with our chat on Skype. I haven’t wiped it from the hard drive yet as a new update came out today. But if you can record calls with Skype now and with that quality…you can’t go wrong.

And Skype partnered up with SixApart a few weeks ago to offer Skype through blogs direct and, from next year, Skype VIDEO (will this be through blogs, too – probably). I’ve seen a preview of Skype video and it’s good, very good indeed.

Skype video is awesome – get the 2.0 beta to try. I might have just been lucky with bandwidth and all coming together at the right time, but my father’s first foray into Skype last week was when we chatted together on video for about half an hour. I can’t remember when we last talked for that length of time without interruption. Thanks Skype 2.

‘course, the implications for the classroom are potentially huge too, as long as it can manage on the measly bandwidth that is our allocation.

re Power Gramo – yep, it’s good. I tried HotRecorder too, along with Pamela which will also allow recording of calls and other stuff besides. Not sure which I prefer but Pammy has a lovely voice for answering the phone.
