The barriers

March 8, 2004 By Will Richardson

Classroom
We see them every day.
Passive users
Can’t be free to express…not on school server. Not unless it’s eds only which defeats the purpose?
No time for colleagues
We don’t want to force them to write, to converse.
Why do we think they would do this anyway? It’s a false reality no matter how we set it up.
Blogging cannot be done in K-12 schools. There, I’ve said it. Blogging only really works if it is subject only to the limits the author puts on it. It can’t be subject to external control and mean anything.
Asynchronous conversations don’t take the place of synchronous. They just aren’t motivated to comment. Not real…forced.
Blogs are cheap Blackboards. Good for posting info, communicating one way. Archiving info. Bringing people into the conversation. Research. E-portfolio. Some collaboration. Easier than old web pages. But on K-12, that’s about it.
