Typhoon in Shanghai

September 18, 2007 By Will Richardson

So here’s the view from Jeff’s apartment at about 3 pm Shanghai time. Typhoon Wipha is scheduled to make a direct hit on Shanghai at about 6 am tomorrow. Eight inches of rain. 60-plus miles an hour winds. Over 200,000 people evacuated already. And we’re on the 31st floor. Guess we’re not gonna make it home tomorrow…

Not sure why — but all the great conversation and availability of Learning 2.0 conference, ir makes me feel like I am sitting in that room with you and can feel the cold of the storm with you all.

For some of us, this will be our first cyber typhoon, so keep us in the loop.

And stay safe — we love you all and are praying for a safe ride through the storm.

What stories you will have to tell!!

Yes this is a very dangerous situation. Wind speeds of 155MPH.

The number one thing is to BE PREPARED. Please go to this Web Site for instructions from the USA National Hurricane Centre on how to prepare. If you have any contacts in Shanghai please, please ensure everyone understands the EXTREME DANGER of this situation – this is a massive Hurricane. Do not mean to worry you but this information will save lives please pass it on.

Go here for Public Advisories and other info for the Typhoon (Hurricane is the same thing) named ‘Wipha’

An extract from a Hurrican Preparedness site at

    http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/HAW2/english/high_winds.shtml

“High-rise buildings are also vulnerable to hurricane-force winds, particularly at the higher levels since wind speed tends to increase with height. Recent research suggests you should stay below the tenth floor, but still above any floors at risk for flooding. It is not uncommon for high-rise buildings to suffer a great deal of damage due to windows being blown out. Consequently, the areas around these buildings can be very dangerous.”

Stock up on food and water and stay inside. Hopefully those who have not the quality of shelter (I assume) you have will get through it.

This is the second typhoon in the last few weeks that has missed us (southern Taiwan) by veering north. Sepat snagged northern Taiwan and now Wipha.

    Good luck!

I hope you all made it through this with body and soul intact. I’m trying to get in touch with my brothers who are on holiday in Shanghai – I guess the phones are in a bit of a jam! (or they have found a beer cellar to take cover in!)

Be careful, that picture does not look that great. Hope things will be okay for you. Just be prepared
