Doesn’t matter who you voted for, history was made last night. I, for one, am happy for my kids.
No matter how the impact of paper newspapers is declining, at moments like these, there’s still nothing like the front page of the paper, not the website, that gives me goosebumps. And in that vein, I’m cruising through the hundreds of covers from around the world at Newseum. Amazing.
Last night was indeed exhilarating, where Twitter became an election process stream of consciousness. You’re right on about the front page of a newspaper. We’ll be able to scrapbook that cover much easier than if we had saved the NYT’s home page.
I agree, I loved that Chris’s SLA students were getting into it and keeping in touch with Chris during the process.
What a great use for Newseum on a morning like this. Students need to see the reaction of this historic event worldwide, not only in the USA. I love how Newseum lets you do that in such a visual way.
Nice, reinforcing reminder, Will, that the world is watching. I too gazed at the Newseum site with delight this morning when I wrote my post about the election results….robinheyden.wordpress.com. So intriguing to see the way that the web helped to bring the election to our doors and into our hearts.
Hey Will,
Nights like this make me yearn to be back in a newsroom instead of working from my cozy home office. I’ll get over it (can’t beat my current commute, or being able to work in slippers), but I definitely miss the buzz that comes with covering history in the making.
Hi Will,
Thanks! What a great way to exhibit how the media across the country has captured this moment. For me, I feel as though I’ve just birthed a baby. All of the expectation and promise has finally materialized. And like a new mom, I gaze down on this miracle and wonder, with excitement and some trepidation, what lies down the road.
It is certainly a historic event! I feel fortunate to have been a part of it! Newseum certainly displays the magnitude of Obama’s election and I agree that it does a good job of showing everyone how important this election really was.
We’re also anxious to see what lies ahead and are talking a little about Obama and the challenges he’ll face. You can check us out at http://current.pic.tv/

As probably one of the few Republicans to frequent this site, I must interject a comment to any other right/right center folks out there. Though, I do not echo the excitement that many of you are probably feeling now, and I do not feel “happy for my kids,” one comment that both Sen. McCain and Pres. Elect Obama made last night rings true after every election (though we sure haven’t embraced it lately) is that now is a time to come together in acceptance and unity as Americans. We must now put our focus on making the United States a better place for all Americans and worry less about what color our state is. Whatever color tie you wore to work on Tuesday is now irrelevant. If we come at problems and disagreements with the bitterness we’ve had over the past few year (from both sides) we’ll never accomplish anything. George Washington once said that “political parties will divide a nation,” he was clearly right. I hope we can use our different perspectives as agents for improvement and not angry disagreement.
I work in an urban elementary school, and the general consensus from the staff, students, and parents was pure euphoria over the results of the election. I know that many of you are not educators, but for those of you who are, I was curious to the reactions’ of your students. Was there any kind of shift in the thinking of today’s children or was that only true in my urban setting? Regardless, what an exciting time to be a part of!
I am happy not just for my daughter and all the kids in the country, but also for myself. I wish we could all share my feeling when I the relief of a heavy burden of frustration was lifted. I woke up happy for no apparent reason but knowing life is going to be better.
Like Lanuation, I do not share the elation that so many feel. I voted against Obama because I sincerely believe that his polices will be disastrous for this nation. he may “heal our souls” but he is also likely to wreck our economy.
I hope and pray that I am wrong.
As you consider how happy you are for your kids, I must interject a little history. Following the Great War (aka World War I), Germany was left destitute and war-torn, with all of the reparations from the war placed on Germany. Despite the fact that Austria-Hungary started the war after a Duke was assassinated. This setting is what allowed Hitler to be elected. He promised change and a return to Germany’s previous status of glory.
If Obama follows his campaign promises (doubtful in my opinion) and pulls the troops out of Iraq, your children may very likely be facing another war on the scale of WW II. That does not bring me joy….
Martin Luther King Jr said:
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”
Did his dream become reality on Tues., Nov. 4, 2008?
As for the election – I too am relieved and delighted with the results. My comment is more about newseum. Perhaps the selection of US papers is good. However the Canadian papers that are linked are not representative of good newspapers – What is there are more the rags – gives a skewed view of Canadian opinion and reporting. With a quick glance at Europe, I have the same criticism. A teacher using this site has to be careful when comparing and contrasting opinions from around the world. This is not very representative of how news is reported.
I was inspired to write this post:
http://nashworld.edublogs.org/2008/11/05/take-that-20th-century/
…after reading your short post here. Just peering through those headlines drove the point home for me. I am sure that site would be valuable on many dates, but that day was just… powerful.
As I scribbled in that post: “I didn’t realize what a breath of fresh air this would really be. There is power in inspiration. There is power in promise. There was a snap in the step of a real majority of Americans today.”
Thanks Will- for posting that link so early. It helped to put things in perspective.
I hope this goes through. BAIL ME OUT! I need back surgery and of course, I have no insurance. Forget the Auto Industry…………what about me? I’m only 55 and would like to be pain free and drug free. My husband only makes $65k, and I am disabled, with no assistance. We are self employed, and have no benefits at all. Please, Please help! We are so happy that you are our new President! God Bless, Ruth
